Technical Editing Since 2000, I've been a Technical Editor / Quality Assurance Tester at Course Technology in Boston, MA. I test a wide range of IT textbooks - build environments and install software according to testing baselines. In addition, thorough documentation of accuracy of steps/instructions teaching software apps, programming languages, etc is part of each project report. I also analyze program/documentation errors as well as develop and compose recommended changes. Technical accuracy involves, among other things, the verification of all instructions and key strokes. The instructional steps in a text should be written in such a way that following them produces the described result. Technical reviewers should concentrate on the technical accuracy of the manuscript, although there are situations where critique of pedagogy is required. A good Tech Editor wears two hats: the primary one is that of a knowledgeable technician with regard to certain software and computer concepts, the other is that of a student. This “student role” takes on varying importance according to the level at which a certain book is written (for basic, intermediate, or advanced audiences with regard to computer literacy). All this and more is part of my daily job as a Technical Editor. |
