It’s here! Today is the worldwide release of Office 2016 for Windows. This marks a milestone in delivering new value for Office 365 subscribers with a focus on collaboration, apps that work for you, a perfect pairing with Windows 10, and security features businesses will love. It also marks a new model for delivery, where subscribers can expect to get more frequent updates with new features and improvements. Along with Office 2016 for Windows, today Microsoft is also releasing Office 2016 for Mac as a one-time purchase option, along with several new and enhanced Office 365 services.

This post includes all of the possible installations outlined by Microsoft as of Sept 22, 2015.

Existing Tech Preview Users

If you have the Office 2016 Tech Preview installed, unless you disabled automatic updates, it was updated automatically. Office 365/Office 2016 products are kept up to date automatically thanks to a technology called Click-to-Run. If you’d like to verify you’re up to date, check your Office version number and manually update Office if necessary.

Check your version of Office

  1. Open any Office application, like Word or Excel.
  2. Click File > Account.
  3. Under Product Information, note the version number below Office Updates.

  1. Compare it against the Version shown in the figure above: 16.0.4229.1024

If the version numbers are the same, you’re up to date (as of 9/22.) If not, manually update to get the latest Office version.

Get the latest version of Office

  1. Open any Office application, like Word or Excel.
  2. Click File > Account.
  3. Under Product Information, click Update Options > Update Now.

Note: If you don’t see Update Now, click Enable Updates to turn on automatic updates. After that, click Update Options > Update Now.

Run an online repair of Office

If automatic and manual Office updates still don’t work, run an online repair of Office.

More Information

Below is a link to listings of the security and critical updates that went into each release. Details about the most-current updates can be found on the Microsoft Update Center.

Note: Updates for a specific Office application will only install if the application is installed. For example, if you have a version of Office that doesn’t come with Outlook, Access, or Publisher, you won’t receive updates for those applications.

New Subscribers

Each Office 365 subscription includes the new Office 2016 apps for your PC and Mac. Before you install or use any Microsoft Office 365 or Office 2016 product, we recommend that you verify that your computer meets or exceeds the minimum system requirements for the product.

What’s the difference between Office 365 plans and Office 2016 suites?
Office 365 plans include the complete suite of Office applications, plus other services that are enabled over the Internet, including extra cloud storage with OneDrive and Skype minutes for home use. With Office 365 you get the full, installed Office experience on PCs, Macs, tablets (including Windows, iPad, and Android) and smartphones. Office 365 plans are available as a monthly or annual subscription. With Office 365, upgrades are always included with your subscription.

Office 2016 suites, including Office Home & Student and Home & Business, include applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote; they are available as a one-time purchase for use on a single PC or Mac. The applications are not automatically updated; to get the latest version, you must purchase Office again when the new version becomes available.

First, uninstall Office:
